ELECTIONS 2019 (CONGRESS) VS (BJP)

India Election 2019: The Congress Coalition Conundrum

Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election, several parties opposed to the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party are rallying around the idea of forming state-level coalitions to block the BJP’s dominance. Such a strategy is regularly touted by Congress President Rahul Gandhi However, among India’s fifteen largest states, representing 85 percent of India’s Parliament seats, about half are unlikely to be impacted by such a strategy. But with a somewhat weakened BJP, coalition-building will be an important tool for both major parties.

In the following chart, I review the important “coalition building” contests to watch in the months ahead, looking at how key parties fared in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. In many states, the main fight will be directly between the BJP and Congress, with regional parties playing a very minor role. There are several states where the BJP remains quite weak and is not expected to contest for a substantial number of seats.

India Election 2019: The Congress Coalition Conundrum

The energy behind the possible creation of unusual coalitions may wane in the coming months. With more modest success in recent state-level elections such as Karnataka and Goa, many Indian political analysts point to a decline in the BJP’s fortunes. Still, the BJP remains India’s national political juggernaut, which could prompt marriages of convenience between political enemies to turn India’s national political tide.

MP elections a test of BJP popularity vs Congress resurgence

The ruling BJP’s broad-based support in Madhya Pradesh shows signs of waning, but it is not clear whether the Congress can capitalize

New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh lies at the heart of India and will soon be at the heart of the nation’s politics. Next month’s assembly elections in the state will give the first indication on whether the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) popularity endures or if a Congress resurgence is imminent.

BJP has dominated the state’s polity over the past several years. This dominance was on display in the last MP elections in 2013 when it secured 45% of all votes—the highest in the state for nearly 30 years—and 72% of seats in the state. BJP’s vote share was 9 percentage points higher than Congress’s (36%) but it was far more successful in converting votes into seats. For every seat won, the BJP needed 92,069 votes, less than half of the Congress figure of 212,332.

BJP also had higher victory margins on average. Of the 165 constituencies it won in the 230-member assembly, the BJP had a victory margin greater than 10% in 92 constituencies. In contrast, the Congress won only 17 of the 58 constituencies with a victory margin greater than 10%. BJP’s victories were equally decisive in reserved and unreserved constituencies.

In Madhya Pradesh, scheduled tribes (STs) account for 21% of the population (compared with 9% of India’s population) and have 47 seats reserved for them.

In 2013, the BJP secured 31 of the 47 seats and, even in overwhelmingly tribal constituencies (more than 80% tribal population), the party registered significant victories.

One reason for this success could be proactive grassroots work in tribal areas by socio-religious affiliates of the Sangh Parivar. In a 2008 research paper, political scientists Tariq Thachil and Ronald Herring attributed BJP’s success in tribal strongholds across India to the Sangh Parivar’s efforts in providing critical social services in tribal pockets. These activities have not just increased BJP’s popularity but also promoted Hindu identity in these areas.

The growth of Hindu identity in a predominantly Hindu state (91% of the state’s population) could explain why both the BJP and Congress have made public displays of their Hindu credentials a central part of their campaigns.

However, recent events could threaten BJP’s prospects in tribal-dominated constituencies and elsewhere. The controversy over the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities Act) and the differing stances of BJP leaders on the issue have opened a chasm between tribal voters and upper caste voters, as a previous Plain Facts column Pointed out. While tribal voters seem to be dissatisfied with the government’s handling of atrocities against the marginalized communities, the BJP’s core upper caste vote bank seems to feel that the government is pandering to tribal and Dalit interest by refusing to dilute the Atrocities Act. Data from post-poll surveys conducted by Lokniti-CSDS suggests that a large majority of upper caste voters support the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, as in other parts of the country. Restiveness among them signals trouble for the party.

The other threat to the BJP in Madhya Pradesh is agrarian distress  in a predominantly agrarian state. While farmers have traditionally supported BJP, pressures on income have led to agrarian riots in recent years.

The political impact of this discontent could be felt more in poorer districts where BJP has enjoyed relatively less support. Using Mint’s District wealth tracker, we find that the BJP’s vote share in the 10 poorest districts of the state was considerably lower at 39% compared with 50% in the 10 richest (more urban) districts.

The combination of farmer protests, SC/ST tensions, and general anti-incumbency sentiment towards a party that has been in power for the past 15 years, in theory, offers hope to the Congress. However, the Congress in Madhya Pradesh has been marred by factionalism. In a 2014 research paper, Shreyas Sardesai of Lokniti-CSDS attributed the party’s disastrous showing in 2013 to factionalism. A united front with a focus on improving their poor votes-to-seat ratio could revive Congress fortunes in the state and the country.

For the BJP, another resounding victory could cement its status as the dominant party in the Hindi belt and boost the morale of party loyalists ahead of 2019. For chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, a fourth term in power could also mean a bigger role in national politics in the years to come.

Pixel 3 vs OnePlus 6T

Pixel 3 vs OnePlus 6T: Which Android should you buy?

It’s a battle between an exceptional camera and a great budget price.

Image result for pixel 3 vs oneplus 6t

If you’re in the market for a premium phone right now, know that there’s more than just the latest iPhone versus Samsung’s Galaxy S9 to consider. This year, two other contenders, the Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6T, also deliver a top-tier Android experience with the latest-and-greatest in processing speeds, cameras and software features.

Starting at $899 (£869, AU$1,349) the Pixel 3 (and its larger counterpart the Pixel 3 XL) earned, has an exceptional camera that takes the most consistent photos in any lighting scenario. Its call blocking feature, which runs on AI straight from Google, also gives it an edge over other great phones this year.

But at the same time, the OnePlus 6T is the most affordable, top-notch Android phone you can get. It starts at only $549 (£499, converts to AU$775), is equipped with a solid camera and an in-screen fingerprint scanner. Best yet for American buyers, the OnePlus 6T now sells through T-Mobile (though you can also pick it up directly from OnePlus’ website), and it works on Verizon’s network too.

OnePlus 6T’s in-screen fingerprint reader vs. Pixel 3’s water resistance

OnePlus 6T wins bragging rights as the first in the US to have a fingerprint-on-display scanner (or FOD). That means you can scan your fingerprint on the front of the display to unlock your screen and the phone has really thin bezels all around. During my time with it, the FOD worked fast enough the majority of the time, but it didn’t work as quickly as the dedicated fingerprint scanner did on the previous OnePlus 6.

Because of the space the FOD takes inside the phone, OnePlus lopped off the 6T’s headphone jack (though the Pixel 3 doesn’t have one either, and so do many other phones). If you don’t already own wireless headphones to listen to music and calls, OnePlus included a USB Type-C to 3.5mm adapter dongle in the box. You can also buy the brand’s USB Type-C earbuds for an extra $20 (£16, converts to AU$30). The Pixel 3, on the other hand, comes bundled with its own Pixel Buds for free.

The Pixel 3 looks similar to last year’ Pixel 2, but subtle design tweaks like thinner bezels and a glossy lining around the phone add more polish this time around. I’m also a big fan of the Pixel’s new color variant “Not Pink.” (Click here to see the “Not Pink” Pixel under a macro lens.

If you’re eyeing the bigger Pixel 3 XL though, you’ll notice that it has one of the thickest on-screen notches we’ve seen. Even though you can hide it, it’s not very flattering compared to the OnePlus 6T’s teardrop-shaped notch (which you can also mask with black bars). Just be glad that Google fixed the bug that made two notches appear on the display.

But whether you get the Pixel 3 XL with the notch, know that both size models have wireless charging, and they can juice up on any Qi-compatible charging mat. (Fast-charging, however, only works on Google’s own Pixel Stand charger.) The Pixel is also rated IPX8, meaning it can survive in about 3 feet underwater (1m) for 30 minutes

OnePlus 6T’s camera is admirable, but the Pixel 3 wins out

At hundreds of dollars less than its competitor, the OnePlus 6T took impressive pictures that were either on par or better at times than the Pixel 3’s camera (on auto mode). For example, there were times when the OnePlus 6T had a wider dynamic range than the Pixel 3 when the Pixel was in its HDR+ mode. The 6T brightened and punched up colors a bit more. But when I switched to the Pixel’s HDR+ enhanced mode, it noticeably outperformed the OnePlus 6T.

Another instance was low-light photography. Both can take excellent shots in dim lighting — brightening up objects and capturing as much information and focus as possible. In the 6T’s Nightscape shooting mode, it retained the same, if not slightly more, details than the Pixel 3. However, the Pixel 3’s Night Sight feature, which became available as an over-the-air update after launch, works extremely well. It brightens up even the darkest of scenes and keeps objects in focus.

pixel-3-night-sight-3

As for taking photos of people, the bokeh effect on the OnePlus 6T and Pixel 3 looked great, but they did have a few sharp patches amongst the softly blurred background. If I had to choose though, I liked how the Pixel retained more foreground detail. Plus, Google’s phone renders the effect using only one camera, as opposed to the OnePlus 6T’s dual-camera setup.

Finally, I preferred the selfies I took on the Pixel. The OnePlus didn’t capture as much detail in my face and hair, and it made my skin look much paler. The Pixel also has a second front-facing camera for wide-angle shots.

Winner: It’s hard not to be impressed by the OnePlus’ camera prowess given its low price tag, but the Pixel 3 is superior.

Software: Android Pie topped with some extras

The Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6T run Google’s latest Android Pie out of the box. They both incorporate many of Pie’s updates including gesture navigation, adaptive battery (in which the phone learns what apps you don’t use often and limits system resources to them) and more options to tweak your phone’s settings when it’s in Do Not Disturb mode.

Other than that though, OnePlus doesn’t add much else to the OS. This isn’t bad necessarily; one of my favorite things about OnePlus phones is its minimalistic take on Android and lack of bloatware. Unlike other phones that sometimes slather superfluous amounts of software, OnePlus keeps things refreshingly simple.

On that note though, while the Pixel 3 adds more to the OS than the OnePlus, these features end up being pretty useful. Call Screen, for example, answers calls on your behalf, and you can read a transcript of the conversation in real time to decide whether or not to block a call or answer it. The Pixel’s Digital Wellbeing feature also shows you how you’re spending your time on the phone and lets you limit app usage accordingly. The phone will receive prompt software updates once they’re available and Pixel owners get unlimited cloud storage for photos as well.

pixel-3-software

Winner: Though I appreciate OnePlus’ restrained approach to Android, the Pixel adds practical features to the user experience without overdoing it

OnePlus 6T has the upper hand with speed and battery

Equipped with Snapdragon 845 chipsets, the Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6T are zippy and responsive. Between them, I don’t really notice any differences in speed with day-to-day tasks like launching apps or firing the camera shutter. But if we were to split hairs, the OnePlus 6T does have the slight edge over the Pixel 3 on benchmark tests. Check out both scores below:

As for battery life, both phones scored excellent marks and lasted over 16 hours on our test for continuous video playback on Airplane Mode. More specifically, the Pixel 3 XL, which has a bigger 3,430mAh battery than its smaller Pixel 3 counterpart’s 2,915mAh battery, clocked in 16 hours and 49 minutes. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 6T lasted longer, with an average closer to 17 hours.

Avengers 4:- End Game

Avengers: Endgame: First trailer, release date, cast, plot and title rumors

Think Avengers: Infinity War was intense? Stay tuned, because the sequel is coming soon.

At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, the credits promised “Thanos will return.” But while Josh Brolin’s purple-tinted, gigantic villain will be back in 2019’s Avengers 4, who else will? If you’ve seen Infinity War (and a lot of you have by now), you know it’s a bit of a mystery. Now we know part two is called Avengers: Endgame and we finally have a trailer.

https://cnet.com/videos/share/avengers-endgame-trailer-revealed/#amp=1

So Avengers: Endgame now has a major situation: No way are all those money-making Marvel heroes gone for good. But some of them probably have to bite the dust for sheer dramatic reasons (and because a few actors have talked publicly about moving on). We’ll have to wait to see exactly who’s taking early retirement, but for now, we can sum up what we know.

At a special event on Oct. 25, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that we’ll see an Avengers 4 trailer before 2019. But then, in a live Q&A on Instagram on Nov. 8, director Joe Russo teased that might or might not happen. Thanks a lot, Marvel. Cover all your bases.

What’s the title of the Infinity War sequel?

The film is still being referred to as Avengers 4, or Untitled Avengers Movie. And there may be a spoiler-y reason why the title is being protected. When a fan on Twitter mentioned being scared about the title because it spoils Infinity War, directors Joe and Anthony Russo ominously said fans are right to be freaked out.

The first title guess we heard was Infinity Gauntlet, which would give away the fact that Thanos acquired all the magical infinity stones in Infinity War. But it’s fun to speculate on a more creative option: “Avengers 4: Black Panther Goes Bye-Bye Forever” (not happening). “Gee, The World Is Really Less Crowded These Days, Maybe Thanos Was Right”? “Avengers: Some Of Us Were Left Behind After The Rapture”? The possibilities are as infinite as the stones.

When will Avengers 4 come out?

Officially, Avengers 4 is scheduled for a May 3, 2019, release in the US and April 26 in the UK, with no Australia release date known yet. But remember: Avengers: Infinity War was scheduled for a May 2018 date, and then Marvel moved it up one week for a late April global release. Maybe keep all of late April-early May 2019 free, just in case.

And as of late July 2018, rumors circulated that the film’s release date had been moved up. CBR notes that IMAX’s quarterly report lists the film’s release date as April, not May. While Disney and IMAX didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, this would fit in with last year’s schedule juggling.

Need a super-specific countdown? Marvel launched a countdown clock in November 2018, in case you want to just sit there and watch it tick down to the release date.

THE END.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

ITS NOT A GAME ITS JUST A FEELING

I recently saw a post where the OP mentioned the three worst feelings in PUBG and that inspired me to create this.

What are your most satisfying moments in the game? What are the best feelings in the game, in your opinion? What moments do you absolutely love and what emotions go with it? COMMENT BELOW YOUR FEELINGS.

My personal top 3 most satisfying moments would be:

  1. Headshot kill with the Winchester

  2. Headshot kill with the 7.62 Revolver

  3. When you are top 3 and the guy you are scoping in on just took out the other guy so you instantly win with a headshot.

Some honorable mentions are

  • Accidentally throwing a grenade instead of a smoke on your downed partner. The laughs or cries that follow are always enjoyable

  • Killing the duo team that killed you and your partner in the previous game

  • Getting into a car with a stranger and they drop you off somewhere to loot

Weirdest Dance Scene

Solar system’s weirdest dance scene: The moons around Pluto

Pluto and its moons

OBSERVATION

There’s a chaotic dance going on at the far end of the solar system, involving Pluto and five of its closest friends, a new study finds.

Hubble Space Telescope images of Pluto, its largest moon Charon, and tinier moons Styx, Nix, Hydra and Kerberos show the odd rhythmic gyrations of the six distant objects in a dance unlike anything in the system.

What makes it so odd is that there’s a double set of dances going on. First, Pluto and Charon are locked together in their own waltz “as if they are a dumbbell” with a rod connecting them, said study author Mark Showalter of the SETI Institute in California. It’s the solar system’s only binary planet system, even though Charon isn’t technically a planet, he said. Pluto, too, is no longer considered a full planet.

“It’s pretty darn weird,” Showalter said.

But Pluto and Charon aren’t alone, and that’s where it gets more complicated.

The four little moons circle the Pluto-Charon combo, wobbling a bit when they go closer to either Pluto or Charon, being pushed and pulled by the two bigger objects.

Those four moons orbit Pluto-Charon in a precise rhythmic way, but with a twist: They also interact when they near each other. So it seems like they all dance to one overarching beat but not quite in the same way, just doing their own thing, said planetary scientist Heidi Hammel of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy.

“It’s kind of like you’d see at a Grateful Dead concert,” Hammel said. She wasn’t part of the study, but praised it as giving a glimpse of what might be happening in other distant star systems where there are two stars and planets that revolve around them, like the mythical Star Wars world of Tatooine.

With the tiny moons wobbling and flipping over in an unpredictable and chaotic way, if you lived on Nix or Hydra, the sun would come up in different parts of the sky, if at all on some days, Showalter said.

“It’s a very strange world,” he said. “You would literally not know if the sun is coming up tomorrow.”

NASA’s $700 million New Horizons spacecraft will arrive in the Pluto system in mid-July after a nine-year 3 billion mile (5 billion kilometer)flight that started before Pluto was demoted to dwarf-planet status.

NASA MARS CRAFT

Nasa's latest Mars craft nears landing for unprecedented seismic mission

Nasa’s

first spacecraft built to explore the deep interior of another world streaked toward a landing scheduled for Monday on a vast, barren plain on Mars, carrying instruments to detect planetary heat and seismic rumblings never measured anywhere but Earth.

After sailing 301 million miles (548 million km) on a six-month voyage through deep space, the robotic lander InSight was due to touch down on the dusty, rock-strewn surface of the Red Planet at about 8 pm GMT.

If all goes according to plan, InSight will hurtle through the top of the thin Martian atmosphere at 12,000 miles per hour (19,310 kilometers per hour). Slowed by friction, deployment of a giant parachute and retro rockets, InSight will descend 77 miles through pink Martian skies to the surface in 6 1/2 minutes, traveling a mere 5 mph (8 kph) by the time it lands.

The stationary probe, launched in May from California, will then pause for 16 minutes for the dust to settle, literally, around its landing site, before disc-shaped solar panels are unfurled like wings to provide power to the spacecraft.

The mission control team at Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) near Los Angeles hopes to receive real-time confirmation of the craft’s arrival from data relayed by a pair of miniature satellites that were launched along with InSight and will be flying past Mars.

The JPL controllers also expect to receive a photograph of the probe’s new surroundings on the flat, smooth Martian plain close to the planet’s equator called the Elysium Planitia. (Photo: REUTERS/Gene Blevnis)

The JPL controllers also expect to receive a photograph of the probe’s new surroundings on the flat, smooth Martian plain close to the planet’s equator called the Elysium Planitia.

The site is roughly 373 miles (600 km) from the 2012 landing spot of the car-sized Mars rover Curiosity, the last spacecraft sent to the Red Planet by Nasa.

The smaller, 880-pound (360 kg) InSight – its name is short for Interior Exploration Using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport – marks the 21st US-launched Mars missions, dating back to the Mariner fly-bys of the 1960s. Nearly two dozen other Mars missions have been sent from other nations.

InSight will spend 24 months – about one Martian year – using seismic monitoring and underground temperature readings to unlock mysteries about how Mars formed and, by extension, the origins of the Earth and other rocky planets of the inner solar system.

While Earth’s tectonics and other forces have erased most evidence of its early history, much of Mars – about one-third the size of Earth – is believed to have remained largely static, creating a geologic time machine for scientists.
